Sun, skin and vitamin D – a natural balance

Did you know that our skin is the body's most important factory for vitamin D? When sunlight hits the skin, a process starts that causes us to produce more vitamin D than we can get from food or supplements alone.

Vitamin D is absolutely essential for the skin – it helps strengthen the skin barrier, regulate inflammation and keep the skin healthy and resilient. However, the skin cannot “borrow” vitamin D from the blood; it depends on producing it itself.

Sun in Oslo – when do we actually get vitamin D?

In Norway, we are not as lucky as those who live closer to the equator. In Oslo, for example, UVB rays are strong enough to trigger vitamin D production only part of the year.

☀️ From April to September: The sun is high enough, and the skin can produce vitamin D with short sun exposure.

☁️ From October to March: UVB rays are too weak and the skin does not produce vitamin D, even though the sun is shining. This is often called “vitamin D winter”.

That's why the sunlight you get in the summer months is extra important - the body can store vitamin D, but many people also need supplements in the winter to maintain good levels.

Why is vitamin D in the skin important?

  • Contributes to normal cell division so that the skin renews itself in a healthy way.
  • Strengthens the skin barrier, providing more moisture and less dryness.
  • Helps calm inflammation, which in turn can slow down signs of aging.
  • Increases the skin's own production of antimicrobial peptides, small proteins that fight unwanted bacteria on the skin's surface.

A little sun boost – without risk

We all know that too much sun can damage the skin, and sunburn should always be avoided. However, research shows that short, regular, and safe sun exposure is actually beneficial – for both the body and the skin.

The skincare market is constantly evolving, and now there are innovative products that can give your skin a "sun effect" without you having to sunbathe for long.

👉 An example is serum with provitamin D, which is activated in sunlight. When the skin is exposed to a few minutes of sun, the provitamin is converted into active vitamin D directly in the skin.

Advantages of such products:

  • Improves the skin barrier so that the skin becomes more supple and hydrated.
  • Contributes to even skin tone and glow.
  • Has a calming effect on sensitive and irritated skin.

Who can benefit from this?

Actually everyone – but especially:

  • You with sensitive skin.
  • Skin that feels dry or flaky.
  • Dull, dull skin tone that lacks glow.
  • Early signs of aging and fine lines.

How to use it?

Apply the serum in the morning along with your regular skin routine. Give your skin a few minutes in the sun (preferably without sunscreen for just that short period) to activate provitamin D. Then apply sun protection as usual, before applying makeup.
